Why is NZ feijoa a superfruit for your metabolic health?

The feijoa is the fruit of Acca sellowiana, an evergreen tree that’s native to Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay. The alternate name for feijoa is ‘pineapple guava’. Feijoas have been grown in New Zealand since 1920 and New Zealand is now the largest producer of feijoas globally.

In addition to vitamin C and folate, feijoas contain three other bioactive compounds that are known to assist with metabolic health:

Abscisic acid, a hormone that acts to stimulate insulin release from the pancreas and increase glucose uptake by muscle cells.

Ellagitannins, which have an anti-inflammatory effect that helps the body to retain all-important insulin sensitivity. Ellagitannins also help to decrease inflammation in the central nervous system, helping to restore appetite regulation.

Xyloglucan, a type of dietary fibre that’s used by specific bacteria in the gut to produce propionate. Propionate acts in the liver to control energy management and energy storage.

The feijoas used to make Feiolix benefit from New Zealand’s elevated UV levels, which are at least 37% higher than similar latitudes in the northern hemisphere. More UV in the sunlight translates to increased levels of bioactives, which are produced as a defence mechanism in the plant’s leaves and fruit.
